Illumina urns are crafted using a process that was inspired by the traditional practice of Japanese Raku firing dating back to 1550. Illumina pots have taken on a westernised method of manufacture utilising natural techniques of the four main elements earth, fire, air and water.
After turning the urn on the wheel our master craftsman allows the urn to dry before placing in a kiln at 1040 degrees celsius. The urns are then glazed and placed into a gas fire at 1000 degrees for many hours.
The final stage is the placement of the pot into a reduction container with combustible materials. The very moment that the materials ignite, the containers are sealed tightly. This process produces an intense reduction atmosphere which creates the beautiful glazed colours and impressions that Raku urns are loved for.
The pots are then submersed into cold water and where they sizzle and relax into their unique permanent design aesthetics.
The unique process of creating Raku urns ensures that no two items are alike, as can be seen in the small distinguishing blemishes that occasionally appear on the exterior walls.
